Installing Power Outdoors

While not mandatory, some homeowners choose to put outdoor structures on their own individual breakers for safety reasons. Having separate circuits ensures that if one outdoor device trips a breaker, it won’t affect other indoor circuits. Consulting a licensed electrician is advisable if you’re unsure about the proper electrical installation of your outdoor structure's wiring. They can help determine whether you decide to use separate circuits or not and ensure that your outdoor electrical system complies with local codes and the NEC.

Installing power from you house to an outdoor building such as a storage shed, or garage requires detailed planning.  The best way to extend power to your outdoor structure is by burying it underground via waterproof cable in a trench.  Cables installed above ground are susceptible to damage from the elements.  The customer can opt to dig the trench themself but be aware of what depths the NEC calls for when burying cable.  You also need to know where the utilities are buried at.

Thompson's Electrical Service can provide the trenching, wire and conduit installation, and communicating with your utilities in order to provide you with the appropriate outdoor power installation services.
